Maintaining Your Retainers

Retainers help prevent your teeth from relapsing toward their previous positions. We have provided some basic information on caring for your retainer on this page. Dr. Frank Iuorno and his team will also provide you with instructions during your visit. We invite you to call West End Orthodontics at 804-364-8366 to learn more about maintaining your retainers and schedule your appointment with our orthodontist in Glen Allen, Virginia.

    When to Wear Your Retainer

You should wear your retainer at all times except when eating for the first month. After that time, Dr. Frank Iuorno will gradually taper the amount of time you wear the retainer.

  • How Long to Wear Your Retainer

You will need to wear the retainer at night throughout your life to ensure your teeth remain properly positioned.

  • Oral Hygiene

Make sure to brush and floss before putting your retainer back in your mouth after eating. If you cannot brush, chew a piece of sugar-free gum for a few minutes and rinse with water, and brush once you return home.

    How to Clean Your Retainer

Use a toothbrush to clean retainers inside and out with cold water and liquid soap. Do not use toothpaste or mouthwash, as it is too abrasive. You can also soak your retainers in a denture cleaner for 15 minutes, and then brush and rinse them to get them extra clean.

    How to Take Retainers Out

Take your retainers out in the back first. Taking them out in the front will cause them to crack.

    How to Put Retainers In

Never use your teeth to put your retainers back in your mouth. This may cause them to break. Use your fingers to settle the retainers in place.
